Baseball bullets

A brief break from Latin American politics to remind everyone that baseball is back.

  • Padres pitchers and catchers have just reported to spring training and the first game is February 29. Finally!
  • Am I the only one who thinks the “body language expert” analyses are rather annoying? With Roger Clemens on 60 Minutes and in Congress, these experts have analyzed every lip licking, shoulder shrugging, head bobbing and ear scratching. I wonder if my students can use this to determine if I am lying in lecture.
  • The Padres will be playing in China next month. I find this very cool in theory, but hope it does not generate injury in addition to good will.
  • I read Cait Murphy’s Crazy ’08, the story of the 1908 baseball season, when after an intense pennant race (and a famously disputed game when Fred Merkle failed to touch second base) the Cubs won the World Series. Great book for anyone into baseball history.
  • Will anyone sign Barry Bonds? Even Barry Zito, who defended Bonds, admits he’s glad Bonds is no longer a Giant

Some of us have more to look forward two than others:

Pujols might need Tommy John, Carpenter nor Mulder should be back until the all-star break.

It should be very interesting to see the impact of teh absence of Edmonds & Rolen on the clubhouse. I dont think Rolen will be missed much, but Edmonds was truly a clubhouse leader. You guys got a standup (if old) ballplayer in that deal.

Of course, there is always the Ankiel factor to keep me entertained. He is going to surprise the people who predict his demise.

Also, there is a youngster named Colby Rasmus who should be up later this year. He has been compared to Chipper Jones (with the bat) and Grady Sizemore, and is the reason we traded Edmonds...hopefully he wont need more seasoning in the minors.

So what are you odds the Padres win thier division this year? The Danny Haren trade (former Cardinal) for the Diamondbacks was just sick. Haren/Webb are you kidding me?

Oh yeah, have you read October 1964 by Halberstam?

Favorite era of Cardinal baseball...I go to youtube & watch old clips of those teams & just salivate.

No, I haven't read that one. As for the Padres, the story should be similar to recent years. We have question marks but enough talent to compete. Obviously the Rockies will remain the favorite.
